UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA

CENTER FOR SMELL AND TASTE

Partnering with Industry

A founding goal of the Center has been to foster the relationship between academe and the flavor and fragrance industry, especially those companies with local operations in Florida.  The emerging partnership between universities and the biomedical research institutes that have moved into the State holds great promise for the biomedical industry. We envision the same potential exists for R&D in the flavor and fragrance industry through partnering with the Center. The Center can not only provide companies with a conduit to specific expertise in the chemical senses, but also to the diverse expertise in all areas of academic endeavor that resides at a large, centralized university of more than 4,500 faculty.

Corporate affiliation typically starts with an exchange of communication or even a visit to establish areas of mutual interest.  Once areas of mutual interest are identified, the company then agrees to become a Corporate Affiliate of the Center, which currently has an annual fee of $3,000 and entitles the company to several specific benefits:

Consulting – the Center facilitates focused consultation with University of Florida scientists, including arranging meetings with individual scientists, roundtable discussions, or videoconferencing.  These can be arranged to be held either on campus or at the Affiliate’s facilities.

Research Review – Corporate Affiliates are invited to attend an annual one-day comprehensive review of chemical senses research at the University of Florida and our new partner institution, Florida State University.  A planned highlight of this meeting is to initiate a special session the following morning to provide an opportunity for Corporate Affiliates to consult with individual scientists and for informal interaction with representatives from other Affiliate organizations.

Collaboration – the Center facilitates formal collaborations with individual faculty or teams of faculty at the University of Florida for specific research projects of mutual interest to both parties that conform to University licensing policy.

Further information about the Center and its mission is available by contacting the Director, Dr. Barry Ache, directly at: bwa@whitney.ufl.edu.
