THE BRAIN JOURNAL CLUB (GMS 6029)
IDP Credit: 1
Meeting: Every Monday at 12:00 in room L1-101
Course Requirements
All IDP students must register for an IDP Journal
Club every semester. Students registered for the first time in the Brain
Journal Club must present at least twice, preferably by the end of the second
semester. Grading is based on Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory performance
and on attendence for each semester. Each student must sign-in to record
attendance.
Synopsis
Students will present research publications in the field of neuroscience. Newer graduate students will team with a Mentor (an upper-classman) to assist with their presentation. A two-member Review Panel will be assigned to provide feedback on the Presentation.
Full-length, high impact articles of broad interest to the neuroscience community should be chosen from the more selective, high-tier journals. Each Journal Club article will be announced widely by email and e-prints will be made available in a downloadable format.
Presenter's Responsibilities
Select your article and mentor well in advance.
One week before your talk, email Dr. Muir:
1. The complete, formatted article citation
2. The article eprint as a pdf
3. A concise synopsis of your talk
4. Name of your BJC Mentor
Mentor's Responsibilities
- Assist/approve article selection
-Assist/approve synopsis (for email announcement)
-Assist/approve presentation content and format
-Introduce the Presenter and be the MC at the BJC
-Aid/prompt during the presentation
-Lead the question session
Reviewers' Responsibilties
Be intimately familiar with the journal article
After the Presentation, provide constructive feedback about:
-Article selection
-Thoroughness/effectiveness of the article review
-Presentation style and quality
-Ways to improve the Presentation and approach
