Journal Clubs at the MBI-UF & Elsewhere

Brain Journal Club
Organizer: Dr. Gerry Shaw, UF Neuroscience (shaw@neocortex.health.ufl.edu)

The Brain Journal Club meets every other Monday at noon in Room LG-100. Papers discussed are of broad interest to all neuroscientists. In order to cover only more significant material only articles published in Nature, Science, Neuron and Cell are presented. Pizza is provided and the paper(s) to be discussed are announced the week before the meeting. (See "Calendar" on NeuroNews web page for specific topic and discussion leader information.)

Cerebral Cortex Journal Club
A group of MBI-UF faculty invites interested faculty and graduate students to join us for a journal club devoted to the cerebral cortex.  The primary foci of the group are intended to be normal and abnormal cortical development, adult cortical structure and function, and occasional forays into comparative and evolutionary issues.

We plan to meet the 2nd Tuesday of each month, from 4:00-5:30pm, or every 2 weeks if there are enough regular participants. A designated presenter will lead the discussion and provide background information at each meeting, with all participants reading and discussing 2-3 main articles.  Graduate students may receive 1 credit of VME 6934, Topics in Veterinary Medical Sciences, and should contact Dr. Roger Reep reep@MBI-UF.ufl.edu before signing up.

The first meeting will be Tuesday, January 12, 1999, at 4pm, in room LG-116 of the Brain Institute. (See "Calendar" on NeuroNews web page for specific topic and discussion leader information.)

Genetics Journal Club
GMS 6920

Organizers: Drs. Maureen Goodenow and Henry Baker

Description: All IDP students enrolled in the Genetics Advanced Concentration are required to register and participate in this journal club. The journal club is open to all interested parties.

The format of the journal club will be theme driven based on the interests of the participants. It is anticipated that themes will center around experimental organisms, but not necessarily so. Themes might include: bacterial genetics, viral genetics, yeast genetics, mouse genetics, human genetics, developmental genetics. Thus, during the semester there may be a four week block on mouse genetics, before moving on to human genetics which would then be followed by another block.

Ideally papers will be selected based on their importance to the field and general interest to the audience. Speakers should be familiar with the subject matter and background. Thus, students may select important papers from the laboratories of their competitors.

Student selection of papers must be discussed with either Drs. Goodenow or Baker two weeks prior to the date of the student's presentation. When appropriate students should also discuss paper selection with their mentor.

One week prior to presentation, at the journal club, the next week's speaker will pass out an abstract of the coming presentation. The abstract will include the complete reference to the paper, the significance of the paper to the field, and important genetic concepts covered in the paper. In addition it would be useful to suggest appropriate background reading that might be appropriate.

In addition to students, faculty participation as speakers is actively encouraged. All speakers are required to provide an abstract one week prior to their presentation.

Questions and comments should be directed to either Drs. Goodenow (phone: 2-3429, email: goodenow.pathology@mail.health.ufl.edu) or Baker (phone: 2-0680, email: hvbaker@ufl.edu).

The Genetics Journal Club will meet on Fridays at noon.  Location TBA.  (See "Calendar" on NeuroNews web page for specific topic and discussion leader information.)

Structural Biology Journal Club
BCH 6876, Sec. No. 5048, 1 Credit

Organizers:
Dr. Art Edison, UF Biochem. & Molecular Biology.
(
art@ascaris.health.ufl.edu)
Dr. Ben Dunn, UF Biochem. & Molecular Biology. (bdunn@biochem.med.ufl.edu)
Dr. Gerry Shaw, UF Neuroscience (shaw@neocortex.health.ufl.edu)

Prereq.: Graduate students or advanced undergraduate status.

Description: Enrolled students will present a paper on a relevant topic of their choice. Appropriate topics will include important macromolecular structures, methods in protein or nucleic acid structure prediction, dynamic studies of macromolecules, protein-ligand interactions, or innovative new experimental techniques.

The Structural Biology Journal Club meets on Thursdays at noon in Room LG-100. (See "Calendar" on NeuroNews web page for specific topic and discussion leader information.)

fMRI Journal Club
GMS 7795, "Special Topics in Neuroscience"
fMRI Journal Club: Fall 2001-2002-Spring 2001, 1 IDP credit

Course Coordinator: Dr. Richard W. Briggs (rbriggs@ufl.edu) tel: 392-2571; fax: 395-0279; office: D10-28, DSB (10th floor, Dental Tower))

Meeting Time and Location: Meets weekly from 4:00-5:00 PM on Wednesdays in LG-100, UF Brain Institute

Course Description: Weekly presentations and discussions of journal articles, scientific meeting abstracts, or original research related to functional brain imaging using one or more modalities (e.g., fMRI, MEG, PET, SPECT, EEG, ERP, optical spectroscopy or microelectrode measurements). Presenters summarize the paper or research and lead a critical discussion and evaluation of it. The audience is encouraged (course enrollees strongly so) to read the papers before the meeting to improve participatory discussion. The papers or topics chosen may be technical in nature, about development and improvement of the methodology (data acquisition, data analysis), about theory of brain functioning or assessment methods, or emphasize physiological or clinical applications. Topics or articles and speakers are announced a week in advance via an e-mail list. The speaker list is arranged 1-3 months in advance.

Course Credit: 1 credit hour. There are two options for assessing credit. Students must inform the course coordinator which option they're choosing at enrollment. Option 1: Letter grades will be based upon two factors: attendance (33%) and performance on two (2) presentations of journal articles (67%). Option 2: Letter grades will be based upon three equally weighted factors: attendance, performance on one (1) presentation of a journal article, and performance on a written exam covering the topics and articles presented in the journal club.
