The auditorium is wedge shaped with semi-circular tiers of seats descending stepwise to the stage. Seating capacity is 162 including four spaces for wheelchairs. To facilitate the use of laptop computers, electrical power and 10Mbit Ethernet connections are available on the table directly in front of each of the seats.

Projection System
The MMA accommodates two ceiling mounted projection systems. These projectors share a 16 x 10 foot screen located above the stage. The projectors are capable of handling the following signals at 1024x1024 resolution:
  • Standard and "S" Video (with "quadrupling")
  • High Resolution Video (RGB+H/V)
  • Podium Computer
  • Silicon Graphics Workstation

Multimedia Podium
The multimedia podium, located on the stage, is the control center for "high tech" presentations. Control functions are divided between "fixed" (room lights, projectors, screens) and "roving" (slide changer) controls. The fixed control functions may available from a touch panel mounted on the podium itself. The roving functions are available from both the touch screen and a wireless remote.

In addition to controls, the podium contains two small monitors to allow the instructor to view the projected images without looking over his/her shoulder. A "video writer" system allows the instructor to point to and markup projected images. A pull-out keyboard and glass covered, recessed monitor allow control of the integrated multimedia computer. The computer is equipped with multiple drives (CD, Zip, Jaz) and an Internet connection. A remote pointing device is available to allow the presenter to move about the stage while controlling the presentation. Power, network, and universal video input are available for instructors who wish to deliver presentations from laptop computers.

The adjacent document camera is capable of displaying laser printed pages, standard transparencies, hand-written notes, X-rays, magnetic resonance images and other film based images.

Summary of Podium Equipment

  • Room/System Controls
  • 2 Small Preview Monitors
  • "Video Writer" (draw on video system)
  • Multimedia Computer (with Zip and DVD drives)
  • Power, Network, Video Input for Portable Equipment
  • Document Camera (on separate stand)

Auxiliary Equipment
Slide Converters (x2)

Instructors are able to walk into the classroom and electronically project their 35mm slides without any special preparation. We currently use slide to video projectors for this purpose. This works well but the resolution is limited to that of standard television. These converters can be controlled from the podium remote. This item is located in the cabinet near the secondary exit.

Video Cassette Player

Instructors are able to walk into the classroom and electronically project their VHS tapes without any special preparation. A small "queuing" monitor is available to check the tape before projecting it. The player needs to be controlled from the podium remote. This item is located in the cabinet near the secondary exit.

Laserdisc/DVD Player

Instructors can walk into the classroom and electronically project their laser disc or DVD materials without any special preparation. The small "queuing" monitor is also shared by this device. The player can be controlled from the podium remote. This is mounted in the cabinet near the secondary exit.

Room Cameras
The MMA will have two remote controlled cameras for teleconferences and remote monitoring. The camera facing the instructor mounted near the back of the room. The camera facing the audience is mounted to the instructor's left in the front of the room. Both cameras have full tilt/pan/zoom capabilities controllable from the podium.

"Smart" Whiteboard
Instructors can use a "smart" whiteboard> for interactive presentations. A portable LCD projection system is used to put images on the board. The instructor has the option to project these images on the large overhead screens and deliver "snap shots" to student computers connected to the network ports at their seats in the MMA, elsewhere in the building, or even over the World Wide Web.

Teleconferencing Console
A portable teleconferencing console consisting of two monitors and a camera can be "rolled in" between the first row of seats facing the instructor. The monitors display both the local and remote teleconference signals. The camera is positioned over the remote monitor to allow the instructor to speak "eye to eye" with students outside the room.

Audio System
This room's high quality audio includes the following elements:
  • Ceiling mounted speakers
  • Wireless microphones
  • Jacks for additional microphones (for a panel presentation)
  • Podium microphone
  • Ceiling mounted microphones for the audience
  • Wired or wireless microphones for the audience (x3, left, right, center)
  • Remote controlled audio mixer
  • Interfaces for remote sites, teleconferencing, etc.
  • Assistive devices for the hearing impaired

35mm Slide Projectors
Two long focus 35mm slide projectors are located at the back of the auditorium. They are wired into the room control system for lamp on/off, previous/next slide, and focus.

Classroom Networking
Every seat in the MMA is wired with category 5 copper, which will be activated as switched 10Mbps ethernet. Two 100Mbps ethernet ports are installed on the multimedia podium, one for the multimedia computer, the other for a portable computer.
