the-art.
Facilities description and content

The audio/visual technical support area is located in the small alcove near the front of the room. This area is mainly filled with rack mounted tape recording equipment (one unit for each of 16 stations plus other playback equipment). Videotape recorders have on screen status indicators (stop, record, pause, etc.) to facilitate remote control. We also have four preview monitors. Controls for the audio system, speakers, and wireless microphone storage are also provided.

Summary of Audiovisual Equipment

  • 17 videotape recorders (one for each station plus one for playback)
  • 4 preview monitors
  • A multimedia computer (with Zip and DVD drives)
  • Room control system (including video switching)
  • Storage/charging stations for 4 wireless microphones
  • A laserdisc/DVD player
  • A 35mm slide converter
Room Camera

Another overhead camera is positioned near the ceiling mounted projection system to allow the room to be monitored from elsewhere in the building. This camera has full tilt and zoom capabilities with remote control. It can also be used as an alternate camera for instruction from the front of the room.

Audio System

The audio system for this room uses the speakers present in each monitor to deliver the instructors voice and other content to each teaching station. The system is able to mix signals from the following sources:

  • 4 wireless microphones
  • Videotape audio tracks
  • Instructional computer
  • Auxiliary sources
Additional Features

In addition, each student has access to:

  • Endoscopic instruments with video output
  • C-arm fluoroscope with video output
  • Electrocautery instrumentation
  • High speed Midas Rex® surgical drills
  • The lab also includes male and female restrooms and changing rooms with lockers, a large specimen preparation and storage room and an instrument washroom for on-site cleaning and decontamination of instruments after use.
Other Facilities
Multimedia Auditorium

The auditorium is wedge shaped with semi-circular tiers of seats descending stepwise to the stage. Seating capacity is 162 including four spaces for wheelchairs. To facilitate the use of laptop computers, electrical power and 10Mbit Ethernet connections are available on the table directly in front of each of the seats. There are additional smaller conference rooms. Rooms for breakfast and lunch are also available.

Multimedia Simulator and Computer Laboratory (MSCL)

The Multidisciplinary Simulation and Computer Laboratory (MSCL) has been designed to serve four functions:

  • A specialized classroom for "live" simulations
  • A formal computer classroom lead by an instructor
  • An informal computer classroom/work area
  • An overflow classroom for the surgical lab and other areas
graphic

The room has a central, sunken stage/work area surrounded on three sides by a semi-circular table defining the "student" area. The student area will have ten Silicon Graphics O2 computer workstations (not part of this with seating for up to 20. A small stairway and wheelchair lift allow students to move to and from the stage as needed.

At different times the stage will accommodate various pieces of audio/visual equipment including:

  • The METI Human Patient Simulator and physiological monitors
  • Advanced computer simulations
  • An instructor's computer
  • Portable video teleconference equipment
The room and computers are configured to allow and "intimate" relationship between students, simulations, and instructors including:
  • On screen display of real-time data from simulations
  • Display, capture, and manipulation of data used by the instructor
  • One to many & many to one links between student & instructor computers
  • Audience response to questions posed by the instructor
  • Multi-way "virtual" conversations via video teleconferencing
Smaller Conference and Utility Rooms

There are additional smaller conference rooms, including rooms for breakfast and lunch time breaks.
