Katherine Sippel
Katherine was born in a barn in Corbin, Kentucky. She was soon transplanted to Dallas, Texas where she quickly assimilated. She received her B.S. in Chemistry, with a minor in Biology and Creative Writing from Texas A&M University Corpus Christi. It was in Corpus that she began her research career studying the phytoremediation of heavy metals by sunflowers under the direction of Dr. Kirk Cammarata.
Katherine is currently enrolled in the IDP and is working towards a Ph.D. in Biochemistry. She is currently involved in an eclectic array of projects including the kinetic and pharmacological studies of Carbonic Anhydrase. Additionally, she is working on the structure of various mosquito Carbonic Anhydrases, the Mycoplasma hyorhinis protein p37, and human Dimethylarginine Dimethylaminohydrolase 1 (DDAH).
Katherine is easily amused and prone to adding pictures to bottles and lab equipment when bored. She also developed a structural branch of interpretive dance and the pantheon of crystallography gods (so she knows who she’s praying to).
